Überblick
A hand-carved wooden homework submission from 2018 - because sometimes a PDF just doesn't cut it.
The Story
In the second semester of studying computer science at the University of Hamburg, two friends and I found ourselves staring at yet another routine mathematics assignment. Instead of submitting the standard handwritten or typed solution, we decided to have a little fun with our math tutor. We carved the assignment onto two wooden planks, painted them white for contrast, added black for legibility, and combined them with a metal ring. Then we handed them in like ten commandments.
The Process
- Find appropriately sized wooden planks lying around at home.
- Create the mathematical solutions and write them out on paper to plan the layout.
- Carve the text and equations into the wood using hand tools.
- Apply white paint as a base coat and let it dry over night.
- Add black paint to the carved grooves for readability.
- Submit. Observe tutor's reaction.
Why?
Because we could. And because it turned a forgettable homework assignment into a memory worth keeping. The tutor took it in good humour and the planks still exist.
Broader Significance
None whatsoever. But that is precisely the point. Not every project needs to advance science or solve a problem. Sometimes it is enough to make something with your hands, share a laugh with friends, and remind yourself not to take things too seriously.
